Zusammenfassung
Vom 26. zum 27. April 1996 fand an der Humboldt-Universität zu Berlin eine Tagung zu James S. Colemans opus magnum, seinen “Foundations of Social Theory”1 statt, die sechs Jahre zuvor erschienen waren. Die bald hernach veröffentlichte dreibändige Übersetzung ins Deutsche und die seit 1995 zur Verfügung stehende preisgünstige Paperback-Ausgabe2, die beide seine Bekanntheit rasch steigerten, war der Sektion „Soziologische Theorie“ in der Deutschen Gesellschaft für Soziologie Anlaß, eine Tagung zu Ehren des im Jahr zuvor verstorbenen James Coleman zu veranstalten. Sie wollte auf diesem Wege einen Gelehrten ehren, der wie wenige vor ihm den ebenso programmatischen wie heroischen Versuch unternommen hatte, die theoretische Soziologie mit einer neuen, allgemeinen Grundlage zu versehen und der sich anschickt, zum Begründer eines einheitlichen, begrifflich konsistenten3 und deduktiv fruchtbaren Forschungsprogramms zu werden4, dem einige Kommentatoren bereits heute Klassizität bescheinigen5.
