Multiplexing for Bidirectional Communication

Abstract

Interactive communication requires bidirectional transmission. There are several methods by which bidirectional transmission on optical fibres can be realised. The following chapter hsts several techniques using one or two fibres for point-to-point connections. However the same techniques can be applied to tree structured PON systems as already indicated in the previous chapter describing multiple access techniques. A combination of the given techniques is also possible, but this chapter only discusses the individual systems. The final choice depends on the required upstream and downstream bit rate, network structure, and for PON systems also on the multiple access method.
