Introduction to ATM-Based B-ISDN

  • Chapter

Abstract

The public switched telephone network (PSTN) is the most widely used network in the world. It provides connectivity between more than half a billion telephone sets and this is still increasing. In the 1970s ideas came up

  • to base this network on digital transport and switching technology

  • to introduce an out-of-band signalling capability to facilitate the integration of voice and data services in the same network.
