Zusammenfassung

Die Wende vom 19. zum 20. Jahrhundert stellt in der US-amerikanischen Geschichte ähnlich wie in der europäischen eine tiefgreifende Transformationsperiode von Gesellschaft, Politik und Kultur dar. Der amerikanische Sozialhistoriker Robert Wiebe hat diese Epoche mit Recht eine Wasserscheide der amerikanischen Gesellschaft genannt, in der sie den entscheidenden Schritt in die Moderne vollzogen habe. Unter dem Einfluss der säkularen Trends von Urbanisierung, Professionalisierung, Bürokratisierung, Industrialisierung und der Durchsetzung einer auf breite Massen- und Konsumbedürfnisse zugeschnittenen Marktwirtschaft bildete sich ein neues Gesellschaftsmodell heraus, mit dem sich das alte Amerika lokaler „island communities“zugunsten neuer Formen der sozialen Integration und funktionalen Differenzierung allmählich auflöste.1
