Zusammenfassung
Im späten 19. und im 20. Jahrhundert breiteten sich auf der ganzen Welt moderne Sportarten aus und gewannen korrelativ an kultureller Zentralität und gesellschaftlicher Bedeutung. Eine der Hauptideologien, die der Anfangsphase dieses Verbreitungsprozesses zugrunde lag, war die Vorstellung, Sport sei „kathartisch“ , d. h. Sport könne als Gegenmittel gegen Gewalt in ihren verschiedenen Erscheinungsformen wirken. Etwa ab den 1970 er Jahren geriet diese Vorstellung jedoch in Verruf und die gegenteilige Vorstellung gewann an Boden, nämlich dass Sport eine Arena sei, in der gewalttätiges Verhalten erlernt werden könne. Ich werde zunächst nachzeichnen, wie sich diese widersprüchlichen Vorstellungen entwickelten.
