Zusammenfassung
Das Studium von Differentialgleichungen und Variationsproblemen begann mit der Entwicklung der neueren Astronomie und Physik und war von Anbeginn diesen Wissenschaften aufs engste verbunden, lassen sich doch alle klassischen Naturgesetze angemessen in Form von Differentialgleichungen oder Variationsprinzipien ausdrücken. Die Untersuchung der mathematischen Gestalt von Himmelskörpern, der Bahnkurven von Planeten oder der Strömungen von Flüssigkeiten und Gasen gehörte ebenso wie das Studium der Schwingungen elastischer Körper, der Ausbreitung von Schall und Licht oder von Gleichgewichts- und Stabilitätsfragen zu den grundlegenden physikalischen Aufgaben, die die Entwicklung der mathematischen Analysis in so erstaunlicher Weise angeregt und gefördert haben. Zu den klassischen Fragen der Analysis zählten auch der Bau optischer Instrumente, die Untersuchung der Wellennatur des Lichtes und — etwas später — die Theorie der Wärmeausbreitung und der elektromagnetischen Phänomene.
