Abstract
Rhizospheric bacteria use organic root exudates of higher plants as a source of energy. A big part of C-compounds is quickly respirated, but the other part in association with bacteria will have the ability to mobilize phosphates.
Therefore, in this paper the ability of an Azospirillum strain to solubilise inorganic phosphate in vitro was investigated. Phosphate mobilization was highest with Ca3(PO4)2 (83 μg P/ml) followed by Ca5(PO4)3OH (57 μg P/ml), FePO4 (16 μg P/ml) and A1PO4 (4 μg P/ml).
The ability of the strain to solubilise Ca3(PO4)2 changed, when glucose was replaced with other sugars which play an important role in root exudation. This was highest with ribose and xylose (important in rhizodeposition of P deficient plants) followed by sucrose-galactose and glucose-fructose (main components in rhizodeposition of optimal nourished plants). The main mechanism for phosphate solubilisation was the production of different sugar acids depending on the C source (gluconic acid with glucose, xylonic acid with xylose).
