Abstract

Discovering how galaxies originated has been a mission for astronomers ever since they first became aware of the existence of these objects. But the desire for this discovery was even stronger in the period from 1985 to 1995, a desire that was fueled on the one hand by an increasing understanding of the structure of galaxies and on the other by the promising attempts to see into the past through distant objects. But researchers were also motivated by another, very different, goal: the joy of measuring something new, seeing something that nobody had ever seen before, not ‘because it’s necessary, but because it’s possible.’

  1. 1.

I am ignoring the small amount of lithium that also came from the Big Bang. It does not play any meaningful role here.
