Abstract
Obtaining a full gynecological history and performing basic examinations and procedures are all important parts of the well-woman visit. It can be difficult for patients to converse and ask questions regarding their sexual health, and having a provider who is able to establish rapport when interviewing and examining patients can allow for a more relaxed and therapeutic environment (Dennerstein et al., Menopause 14(4):688–696, 2007). The use of simulation to help students learn history taking skills as well as proper gynecologic examination techniques will be reviewed. The goal of this chapter is to identify basic gynecologic encounters and procedures where simulation can help learners improve their skills. We will review available trainer options and discuss the use of standardized patients to provide a multifaceted approach to teach what can be delicate interactions and procedures.
