Textbooks and War

Part of the book series: Palgrave Studies in Educational Media ((PSEM))

Abstract

In this chapter, Caroli analyses the development of canons of the representation of war in education in the Soviet Union between 1940 and 1950. Tracing the development and revision of textbooks in the 1920s and 1930s, Caroli explores how history education was used to shape communist and nationalist identity. An analysis of the presentation of wars in educational materials produced during the Second World War then sheds light on how war became a source of patriotic education. Finally, through a comparative analysis of the 1940 and postwar editions of the textbook Istoriia SSSR (History of the USSR), Caroli shows how the official history of the Second World War was produced and enforced.
