Abstract
Gastroesophageal reflux disease (GERD) affects a significant proportion of the population. Patients can present with the typical symptoms of heartburn and/or regurgitation, or they may present with extra-esophageal symptoms, including chest pain, dysphagia, and weight loss. Once the diagnosis has been established, treatment proceeds in a stepwise manner beginning with lifestyle modification and medical management. For patients who meet surgical indications, they are recommended to undergo preoperative diagnostic testing and imaging. If they are deemed acceptable surgical candidates, options include fundoplication, Roux-en-Y gastric bypass, and magnetic sphincter augmentation.
