Abstract
In this chapter, the limits of governance are identified and possibilities to improve the knowledge basis of global environmental governance are discussed in two steps. First, it is shown how governance strategies can be embedded in interdisciplinary knowledge about global social and environmental change. Then, governance is discussed in terms of temporal structuring of possibilities and pathways of transformation. The temporal structuring shows the dilemmas of transformative action as part of global environmental governance: it requires intensified forms of cooperation, knowledge integration and synthesis. As a consequence, governance strategies need to be differentiated in temporal, spatial and social dimensions, knowledge practices improved through continuous monitoring, collective learning and updating.
