Concise Guide to Hematology

Abstract

This chapter introduced the subject of iron metabolism, including the regulation of body iron distribution and intestinal iron absorption, followed by an explanation of the pathophysiology of iron depletion. The phases of the development of iron-deficiency anemia and its prevalence in different populations at risk are outlined. The clinical manifestations of iron deficiency and the resulting anemia are reviewed, along with a description of laboratory tests to diagnose the condition. The importance of determining the cause of the patient’s iron deficiency and the approach to treatment is summarized. The final section focused on the anemia of inflammation and its differentiation from iron deficiency.
