Abstract
This chapter provides the reader with enough background information to understand the complexities of the research project. The chapter reviews the theories and practices of critical pedagogy in more depth, discusses the field’s main thinkers and influencers, particularly Paulo Freire , and presents a framework to help understand and analyze the concept of conscientization . The reader is introduced to learning themes in critical pedagogy such as academic , topical, and generative . This chapter also reviews a wide range of selected initiatives that use film and video for social change through participatory activities, several of which, such as the Fogo Process , are discussed in detail.
