Abstract

Total proctocolectomy with ileal pouch-anal anastomosis is the procedure of choice for the surgical treatment for ulcerative colitis or familial adenomatous polyposis. Since the initial description of this operation in 1970s, the surgical techniques have evolved over the years from open surgery to laparoscopic approach in order to obtain better postoperative outcomes. Recently, the introduction of robotic systems with its technical advantages over laparoscopy has revolutionized minimal invasive surgery. As a result, robotic surgery has been preferred for many colorectal procedures, including total proctocolectomy, in the hope to further optimize surgical outcomes. In this chapter, we present a literature review on robotic proctocolectomy procedure and describe the technical aspects of this operation and perioperative patient care.
