Abstract
This chapter explores the role of Baltimore Maryland its cultural milieu and the likely effect on Poe’s writings. It is the story of Poe finding an enduring family, a new career, and a tragic fate. Following his death in 1849 Poe’s reputation suffered greatly at the hands of his literary executor, Rufus Wilmot Griswold, and the legion of professional scribblers who felt that Poe had personally abused them in his criticisms. The movement to erect a monument over his grave in Baltimore began quietly, but quickly became a rallying call to reconsider America’s misunderstood genius. The final result was a renewed interest in Poe’s life and writings and a lasting place in the American literary pantheon.
