Abstract

Throughout their history, the merchant banks had been exposed to intense competition both domestically and internationally. It is a measure of the resilience and adaptability of some of these firms that they continue in business today, albeit undertaking different activities than those undertaken in the interwar period. The transformation of this sector had its roots in the interwar period, and forms an important part of British financial history.
