Abstract
This chapter outlines the rationale behind the book’s formal and stylistic approach to the study of conversion narratives, its chosen chronology and cross-confessional methodology. It considers conversion’s position as a masterplot, and the influence of narrative models and typologies upon stories of conversion. The introduction also situates the book in the critical field, drawing attention to how it is distinct from previous studies of early modern life-writing and seventeenth-century Protestant spiritual autobiography.
