Abstract
Postmodern culture is characterised by what Jean-François Lyotard calls an incredulity towards metanarratives, the overarching stories about the world, whether they be religious or modern. To the extent that we live in postmodern times, we live among cultural ruins, and construct our lives using a bricolage of fragments whose original setting is lost. This includes a heritage from the religious discourses about animals discussed in previous chapters. Creative bricolage can illuminate the just and compassionate treatment of animals. This final chapter explores some of the practical implications of nonconformist bricolage for a postmodern culture sceptical towards grand narratives.
