Abstract
For centuries London has had world status, not only musically, but also in business and economic terms. However, London is considered the most expensive city in the world for a fledging musician to forge a career. Despite this, London is touted as the world’s music business capital. Based on a textual analysis of government policies, studies and journalism coverage about the local and UK music scene, laced with qualitative evidence from music industry representatives’ from Berlin, Melbourne and Toronto, this chapter explores the problematic nature of this music title. It unpacks London’s urban sociability, its link to traditional and digital music business models and application of algorithms A to C. Uncovering the strengths of the music city of London, the chapter also discusses the obstacles that affect its sustainability.
