Abstract
Relying heavily on primary sources, this chapter examines the initial human trials of Jonas E. Salk’s polio vaccine at the D. T. Watson Home for Crippled Children and Polk State School. The consent process involved the state of Pennsylvania, parents, and institutions. It also covers the internecine battles within the National Foundation for Infantile Paralysis/March of Dimes over human trials. Finally, it closes with a reconsideration of self-experimentation.
