Abstract
Dietrich Bonhoeffer and Hans Dohnanyi are arrested by the Gestapo in April 1943 under suspicion of being in the resistance. From his cell in Tegel prison, Dietrich writes many letters, some filled with theology. Karl-Friedrich supplies him with books, among them The World View of Physics by Weizsäcker, which prompts Dietrich to ponder the meaning of “a world come of age.” After the failure of the plot to kill Hitler in July 1944, all the Bonhoeffers are in danger. Klaus and Rüdiger Schleicher, a brother-in-law, are arrested in October. Karl-Friedrich’s situation at Leipzig is precarious because a Nazi colleague denounced him for harboring Jews. Dietrich, Klaus, Hans, and Rüdinger are executed in April 1945.
