The Kock Pouch

Abstract

Follow-up and surveillance of the Kock pouch, also known as the Kock continent ileostomy, is determined by the initial indication for the pouch. Kock pouch formation is considered an option to improve a patient’s quality of life, and the indications for the pouch are usually similar to those for an ileoanal pouch. The frequency of Kock pouch creation is lower than that for the ileoanal pouch as there is a higher risk of revisional surgery. When considering follow up and surveillance it is important to bear in mind any potential risk requiring surveillance and the likelihood of such a risk occurring. On this basis, this chapter highlights some of the risks of the Kock pouch in the context of the initial indication, and discusses appropriate follow up regimes.
