The Social Contract: The Wage Relation

Abstract

We use the concept of social contract in the sense of a social compromise, a less totalizing conception than that of Rousseau, yet large enough to englobe economy, society and politics. The social compromise emerges from a certain relation between the social sectors, the State, and what we have called the dominant social coalition. It depends on the position that the State, the popular sectors and capital occupy in it. The wage relation does not concern exclusively wages, it comprises also indirect forms such as the regulations of the labor market and the social security system (health, pensions, unemployment benefits, etc.), as well as the conditions in which labor is negotiated in the labor market. In this manner, the wage relation defines the characteristics of the mode of consumption. In some types of capitalism there is little distribution and profits are concentrated, while in others there is a compromise to redistribute part of the wealth derived from economic growth.
