End of Life: Honor and Celebration of TGNC Individuals

  • Chapter
Book cover Transgender and Gender Nonconforming Health and Aging

Abstract

Building a safe, open, and affirming environment is essential for creating trust and providing culturally competent care to TGNC older adults. This is perhaps especially true when addressing a subject as emotional as impending death. Care staff providing end-of-life care must be prepared to deal with the added layers of concerns that are uniquely connected to personal identities, neglect, and the societal oppression that TGNC older adults face. The process of accepting death can be an empowering one, hopefully leading to the ability of the individual to celebrate their memories and their life journey. Key elements and recommendations for appropriate memorial celebrations are shared.
