Abstract
Appropriate documentation of the care provided to critically ill patients is crucial for communication between healthcare professionals and a key to patient safety. On top of this, adequate documentation is required by insurers for providers to be appropriately compensated for their services. Unfortunately, like the healthcare system itself, billing for medical services is quite complex and confusing. The case described in this chapter follows the care of a critically ill patient from hospital admission through discharge to a weaning unit. Care is provided by critical care attendings, advanced practice providers, and residents. The discussion describes how to document and appropriately bill for critical care services provided during this patient’s hospital stay. This case-based chapter is designed to help demystify critical care billing.
