Abstract

To counteract the high number of musculoskeletal disorders (MSDs) and to contribute to health prevention, numerous companies and institutes are currently focusing on developing assistance systems and exoskeletons for manual load handling. At the same time, the question arises whether the newly developed exoskeletons actually provide support for manual activities. This publication discusses the development of a standardized methodology for quantifying the stress of manual load handling activities using cardiopulmonary exercise testing (CPET), which can also be used to objectively classify the supportive level exoskeletons when using the Exoskeleton Assistance Assessment (EAA)-Tool. A study evaluating a passive leg exoskeleton illustrates the use of the methodology. In addition, the applicability, limits and fulfillment of the quality criteria of the measurement methodology are discussed.
