Abstract

This paper deals with the Internet Protocol Telephony or simply IP Telephony. We explain the meaning of this technology, its conveniences and disadvantages, evolution and history. The last part of the work informs about the most popular and widely used programs, which provide IP Telephony: Skype as a pioneer in a modern IP Telephony market with its peer-to-peer system and Whatsapp, a relative newcomer with a client-server system, which has gained much on the popularity among both young and elder generations in the last few years. Finally, a comparison matrix is given, which briefly displays the main differences and similarities between other popular VoIP applications (Viber, Telegram, Facebook Messenger, Google Hangouts, including Skype and Whatsapp).
