Abstract
The subject of study and research is focused on the analysis of geometry and the design and execution procedure of the springers of the star vault of the Chapter house in the monastery of Santa María, located in Simat de Valldigna (Valencia, Spain). The vault was built at the end of the fifteenth century. The springers of the vault have the springer’s horizontal plane located on four minute cantilevered corbels arranged in each one of the four angles of the Chapter house. This research shows the geometry of the springer in the springer’s plane and the different pieces that make the tas-de-charge. The following conclusions have been obtained:
-
It has been determined the way in which the intersection of the different ribs takes place.
-
The five arches that come together in the springers are aligned according to an arch of circumference, by the intrados.
-
The arches have a different number of courses in the tas-de-charge: the wall rib consists of seven courses and the diagonal and tierceron have ten courses.
-
Other geometric relations have been determined, as well as those that relate to the geometry of the springers; their design and execution would determine authorship.

This paper has been extracted from the doctoral thesis of the author of the same, entitled “Geometry, art and construction. Vaults in the Valencian Kingdom during the XIII–XVI centuries”), making some extensions and updates on what is contained there. The doctoral thesis was read at the Universitat Politècnica de València on February 10, 2016. During the last period of development of the thesis—from 2013 to 2015, the author was part of the research team that developed the R+D+i Project “Trazas y monteas de la arquitectura valenciana. Bóvedas del siglo XVII” (Traces and elevations of Valencian architecture. Vaults in the 17th century), reference HAR2013-32353, composed of an interdisciplinary team of professors from the Universitat Politècnica de València. The principal researcher of the same, Dr. D. Juan Carlos Navarro Fajardo was one of the directors of the thesis, together with Dr. D. Rafael Soler Verdú.
We appreciate the participation in the English translation from Jacinta Harrington-Flynn.
