Abstract

The way in which architectural ideas are produced is very varied. Some people think that they are the result of inspiration, an unconscious revelation. Others believe that they are the result of a rational and conscious research process, adapted to the specific needs of the project. Others consider that architectural ideas arise from a “biological way”, based on existential knowledge. We think architectural problems are too complex to be solved in an exclusively conceptualized and rational way, which is the way the imagination gives us. Sometimes there are exceptional cases in which inspiration, the sudden outbreak of artistic creation, surprises us. We find the perfect solution to the posed problem and we feel, for a moment, what is genius. Unfortunately our inspiration comes and goes and cannot be summoned to our whim. However, different psychological studies conclude that inspiration can be trained, so we can prepare our minds to more frequent moments of inspiration. Our question is: Would it be possible to “rationally” stimulate our inspiration for the preconception of architectural spaces? In this text we will try to suggest how we might create architectural ideas by using some strategies of sensorial stimulation: look, drawing, hybrid graphics, cinematography and some non-visual systems.
