Abstract

An overview is provided of the indication for and biomechanical stability of laminar hooks in the cervical spine. Prerequisites for the placement of laminar hooks are that the lamina is intact and that several angles of the hook in relation to the lamina (‘offset angles’) are present.

Laminar hooks can be used to replace a lateral mass or pedicle screw but also to replace a C1 or C2 screw. In the latter case, the hooks are preferably placed as a ‘claw’ around the lamen. Biomechanical considerations are summarized. Two cases are included to illustrate indication and outcome.
