Gastroenterology For General Surgeons

Abstract

Splenic function is pivotal to host immunity. The spleen is often affected by blunt abdominal trauma, and general surgical input is required for management of these patients. Multiple hematological and hepatobiliary disorders affect the spleen, and surgical input may be required to discuss elective splenectomy. Asplenic patients can present with fulminant sepsis, a condition that requires immediate identification and aggressive treatment.
