Abstract
Microaggressions are subtle forms of discrimination, often unintentional and unconscious, which send negative and denigrating messages to various individuals and groups (Virginia et al.,Qual Psychol 2(2):147–163, 2015). Providing quality and equitable care to all patients requires that healthcare organizations invest in creating a climate of inclusiveness, where differences are valued. In their focus to improve diversity, many institutions focus on only one element of the climate: increasing the numbers of underrepresented racial and ethnic minorities. The focus needs to shift to include additional inclusive elements in the milieu, resulting in a work environment where differences are valued and everyone, no matter his or her background, can thrive.
