Abstract
This concluding chapter integrates the theoretical frameworks and empirical results from the previous chapters to present a summarized answer to the research question: In what ways have processes of state formation created new states? The result is a comprehensive model of state formation and democratization. The parts from the previous chapters create a chain of processes over time: a new state emerges from a path to independence that establishes an initial regime that has more or less democratic qualities that affect the probability of democratization in the new state. The chapter also emphasizes the contribution of the study to research on state formation and democratization but also identifies agenda with research questions for future research.
