Parody as Genealogy and Tradition in Nazi Literature in the Americas

Abstract

This chapter examines three interrelated aspects of the production of Nazi Literature in the Americas. First, Nogueira shows how Roberto Bolaño intentionally constructs his literary genealogy, selecting not only the Spanish American authors that precede him, but also the main traits they offer him through the parodic genre of imagined biographies created by Schwob. She then studies how the word “Nazi” is disseminated by the various symbols of Fascism, the historical figure of Adolph Hitler, Neo-Nazi ideology, and the figure of the mediocre artist. Finally, upon relating parody to the critical feature of postmodernist literature, Nogueira argues that Neo-Nazi parodic criticism is the main technique employed by Bolaño to criticize a bland, neutral, and institutionalized literary production.
