Abstract
This chapter presents the research field of interest: professionals in end-of-life care and the research question pursued: How encounters with death of others inform the health professionals’ understanding of themselves as well as their professional role. One no longer dies at home. Hence, the author argues for the need of new knowledge based on shifts in end-of-life care from being part of the domestic sphere to become a professional task. It is argued how such encounters may bring out emotional and existential stress in the professional. Thus, the need to investigate and strengthen the understanding of how encountering death influences professionals in end-of-life care, an understanding crucial when considering what measures should be developed and implemented to prepare, sustain, and develop the end-of-life care professionals. The chapter also gives an overview over a larger research field and points at similarities and differences and makes evident how the study can bridge gaps in current literature.
