The main indication for mechanical ventilation is respiratory failure, defined as the inability of the lungs to perform adequate gas exchange. Mechanical ventilators utilize positive pressure to support gas exchange and unload the muscles of respiration. This chapter will review some of the common causes of respiratory failure.
