Abstract
This chapter details the inflammatory reaction patterns and the tumour-forming processes found in mucosal biopsy specimens and mucosal resection specimens of the small intestine. In terms of inflammatory reactions, most attention is given to the finding of intraepithelial lymphocytosis with associated lamina propria inflammation. The major diagnostic consideration is coeliac disease; however, the other causes of this reaction pattern are fully discussed. Less common inflammatory processes and their causes are also presented following the schema developed in Chap. 1. Finally, infective conditions affecting the small intestine, but often elsewhere in the gastrointestinal tract, are fully covered in this chapter.
