Abstract

This chapter explores how transcultural skills and practices are influenced by ideology, and vice versa. The first part of the chapter interprets migration as a strategic response to illiteracy. It shows the influence of conflicting ideologies over language use and acquisition, and the importance of migrants’ linguistic and transcultural skills and practices. The second part analyses the role of religion in the lives of Italian migrants, and the contrasts between Italian Catholic migrants and the Irish-Australian Catholic hierarchy. The third part of the chapter illustrates the transnational nature of migrants’ political ideologies, but also their transcultural flexibility in promoting and negotiating their politics. The concluding section analyses the importance of ethnic media in providing key information and support to the Italian community, but also the ethnic media’s limitations in representing and giving voice to the experiences and ideas of the majority of migrants.
