Abstract
Bone growth and mineralization require adequate amounts of calcium and phosphate from childhood throughout adolescence. When deficiencies of these occur, long bone thinning can lead to the characteristic bowing of rickets and fractures of osteomalacia. Identification of the cause of the deficiency can be genetic or nutritional. Timely management can prevent complications that could lead to motor developmental delay or orthopedic intervention of skeletal deformities.
