Minimally Invasive Aesthetic Procedures

Abstract

Salicylic acid peeling is classified as superficial; its mechanism of action is desmolytic instead of true keratolytic. It is used in the treatment of acne vulgaris in the chest and back, melasma of forearms and preesternal region, post-inflammatory hyperpigmentation, lentigines, photodamage, texturally roughened skin, fine wrinkling, psoriasis plaques, and keratosis or callosity. It is used safely in IV and V skin phototypes. Prior to its application, topical retinoids, benzoyl peroxide, kojic acid, alpha-hydroxy acids, hydroquinone, or topical retinoids are recommended to prepare the skin for exfoliation. It isn´t recommended to apply in large areas of the skin, especially at high concentrations, because there is a risk of salicylism, which is its worst complication, while one of the most frequent is skin dyschromias.
