A Perspective on 40 Years of Polymers in Concrete History
This paper presents a brief history of the author’s experience with using polymers in concrete beginning in 1976. The manufacture of precast underground utility structures are a significant application of polymer concrete. As the use of these products grew, standards were developed and applied to make the products more consistent from the various suppliers. There are some significant differences among the standards in use. These differences are discussed, and some suggestions for improvements to make the standards agree are presented. Drainage structures are also being successfully manufactured and used, and their use is discussed. Both underground utility structures and drainage structures are typically made using polyester-based polymer concrete with vinyl ester being used where corrosive environments are present.
