Abstract

The book is concluded through a comparison of 1970s tropes within contemporary media. The conflict in Northern Ireland, The Angry Brigade and narratives of the end of Empire are all seen to have recurred in the twenty-first century through the medium of historical fiction. Contemporary fiction set in the 1970s is shown to be more reserved in its attitudes to terrorism than 1970s terrorist novels, but more free to sympathise with terrorist characters. The conclusion ends with a comparison of Islamic militants in Burgess’ 1985 with our contemporary understanding of the ISIS and the Al Qaida.
