Introduction

  • Christina Wilkins
Chapter

Abstract

Drawing upon the history of the vampire, this introductory chapter explores the figure’s origins and provides the background for how it has come to be portrayed post-9/11. Wilkins simultaneously introduces the key issues surrounding the events of 9/11: trauma, identity and religion, providing a brief context for each. It details the elements used in each chapter of the text and sets out its main argument: that the vampire embodies the anxieties of the post-9/11 cultural psyche (in the US) and functions as both symptom and solution for the related trauma of the events.
