Full Metal Jacket

  • Ashley M. Donnelly

Chapter six focuses on Stanley Kubrick’s Full Metal Jacket as an example of blank cinema. The author argues that Kubrick uses the basic form and tropes of popular war films, but manipulates them with challenging protagonists and interrogative investigations of military ideals and the rhetoric of violence. Such manipulation of styles enables blank artists to use signs of power in cinema and attempts to put the control of these signs into the hands of those concerned with social responsibility and messages of humanity, rather than those concerned with a perpetuation of violence and status quo attitudes of military power.
