Abstract
A horizontal beam of abruptly changing depth is considered. The beam parts to the left and right of the recess constitute a D-region. The extent of this region is discussed. The equilibrium set of loading forces is presumed to be obtained from a beam analysis program. The forces in the stringers and panels can be computed by hand on the basis of considerations of equilibrium alone. In the D-region, the shear stresses become substantially larger than in the adjacent beam members. Finally, the considered case is used to demonstrate the way in which the SPM result can be used to find a proper strut-and-tie model.
