Abstract
At the outset, this introductory chapter explores the Greek term hamartia, which can be translated as flaw, fault, mistake, sin, or error, as an essential element of Aristotelian tragedy. This chapter offers an historical overview of several theories of error from Aristotle via André Dacier and other theorists of tragedy to the present. Subsequently, the chapter explores the striking intersection of the simultaneous rise of interest in error, the tragic, and performance in Enlightenment Germany and France.
