Management of Rivers in the GBM Delta

The vast alluvial plain, bright sunlight and plenty of silt-laden water have been the cardinal factors making Bengal agriculturally prosperous and ecologically productive. The farmers of Bengal had been living with the flood through ages. But the colonial rulers and landlords having no understanding about the ecological services of the flood started to embank the rivers and that invited serious drainage congestion. The situation was further aggravated when roads and railways were built with inadequate outlets of flood water. The second half of the twentieth century witnessed building of dams/barrages across many rivers with the targets of flood control, irrigation and hydro-power generation. Though these projects have some positive impacts, the ecological raptures in the basins were alarming. The rivers were horizontally disconnected from their floodplain due to building of embankments along the banks and also longitudinally disconnected by dams and barrages.
