Introduction: Conceptualizing Occult Modernism
- 366 Downloads
In this introduction the editors present the topic of the book, launching the concept of ‘occult modernism’ to describe the interaction of occultism and modernism in the arts. A brief overview of how earlier scholarship has neglected or even actively avoided mentioning the relationship between occultism and modernism provides a justification for the present volume. The editors identify methodological problems that persist in contemporary scholarship, and offer suggestions on how these can be overcome. A new scientific framework is elaborated in the form of a typology of occult modernism, which can be applied to the study of individual works of occult modernism in different media. Finally, the editors introduce the contributions to the volume.
