In the early morning of April 13, 1992, the residents of the German-Dutch border area between Roermond and Düren, and as far as Cologne and Bonn, awakened from their sleep by tremors that caused bookshelves to tumble, cups to clank in the cupboards and tiles to fall from the roofs.
